Evelyn Estelle Lewis, 85, of Woodway, fell asleep in the arms of Jesus on Friday, October 22, 2010. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors Chapel with Dr. Randy Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, October 25, 2010 at the funeral home.
Evelyn was born September 26, 1925 in Winters, Texas to Herman Berry and Dore Wren (Powers) Scoggins. She lived most of her younger years in Ballinger, Texas where her mother owned a children’s clothing store and her father was the town barber. She married Vernon Lewis on March 14, 1944. For nearly 56 years she was a loving and supportive wife. After following her Air Force pilot husband, the love of her live, around the world they finally landed and made their home in Waco. Evelyn worked a number of years for Betsy’s Boutique. She had an eye for beautiful clothes and dressed many a lady. She truly loved her customers and her work and was rewarded with a wonderful group of lifelong friends. She had a heart full of love for all, and she was always there to help anyone in any capacity. After God, family was the most important thing in her life. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her favorite subject. And yes, her many fuzzy, four-legged grandchildren also gave her much joy and laughter.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Vernon Lee Lewis; daughters, Shirley Lewis, Teresa Lewis; brothers, Gene Scoggins, Bill Scoggins.
Those left behind to cherish Evelyn’s memory are her sons, Ted Lewis and wife, Karen, Kenny Lewis and wife, Robin; grandchildren, Jodi Smith, Francine Spelker, Ryan McDaniel, Jaci Christensen, Jessica Lewis, Derrick Beckham; great grandchildren, Peyton Spelker, Grace Spelker, Autumn Spelker, Olivia Spelker, Aaron Smith, Ryan Smith, Remi Smith; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and her other family and friends that loved her dearly and will hold her memory close to their hearts.
Pallbearers will be Derrick Beckham, Sid Franklin, Ryan McDaniel, Billy Scoggins, Bryan Scoggins, David Scoggins, and Scottie Scoggins. Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Bennett, John Christensen, Sheriff Larry Lynch, Rolf Spelker, Trent Spivey, and Jim Vidrine.
A note of gratitude is extended to a special group of caregivers: Ridgecrest Assisted Living, Ridgecrest Nursing Home and Bluebonnet Hospice. You all showed the upmost love, gentleness and respect for Evelyn and her family. Our deepest thanks.
