2025, in Waco, Texas. She was born June 9, 1928, the older of two children, to
Gladys Dean Crippen and Walter Crippen in Waco, Texas. Barbara graduated from
Waco High School in 1945 and attended Texas Women’s University, where she
received her BA degree in Art and Fashion. She married Jack Brooks of Waco in
1950 and raised their family in Dallas. Barbara worked as an artist in the fashion
industry, drawing the latest fashion clothing for department stores (Facho’s, E.M.
Kahn, Margo’s LaMode, Titche’s, Foley’s) to advertise in the local newspapers.
She moved to Houston in 1984, working as a secretary for a local investment
office, and then working in sales for various department stores before retiring in
2012. She enjoyed painting, playing the piano, traveling and loved watching the
Houston Texans and Astros.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Betty Lou Kennan of Mesquite,
Texas.
Barbara leaves behind to cherish her memories two daughters and a son: Lisa
Ruthven and husband, Glenn, of Mason; Laurie Luck and husband, David, of
Cypress; Russell Brooks and wife, Laurie, of Waco; her grandchildren: John Luck
and wife, Mary; Larry Luck and fiancé, Cassidy; Randy Luck and wife, Emily;
Jessica Post and husband, Cameron; and Jacob Brooks; and great-grandchildren:
David, Abigail, Margaret, Molly, and Mary.
The family thanks all the amazing folks at Lynridge of Waco and Gentiva Hospice
for the care and comfort provided to Barbara over these past several months. Your
kindness and hard work are appreciated.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at
Oakwood Cemetery in Waco (2124 S 5th St, Waco, Texas 76706) with Reverend
David Cozart officiating.
