It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Walter Luther Lown III, age 71, of West Columbia, South Carolina. On Thursday, June 27, 2024, surrounded by his loving family, Walter peacefully transitioned from this life. Born on September 18, 1952, in Columbia, SC to the late Marie Steele and Walter L. Lown, Jr., Walter's life was a painted with hues of laughter and affection.
Well-known for his contagious sense of humor and playful spirit that brightened the days of all who crossed his path, Walter found joy in life's simple pleasures – fishing, hunting, and tending to his garden. He enjoyed spending time on the river in Beaufort, SC where he found peace and comfort in being surrounded by the beauty of nature. He also took great pleasure in spending time laughing, loafing about and solving the world’s problems with his “McDonald’s morning crew”.
As the proud owner of Lown Construction, Walter poured his dedication and craftsmanship into every project. His drive for success was not solely driven by a strong work ethic, but also by a deep desire to impact the lives of those around him. He had a knack for recognizing the potential in his employees, motivating them to surpass their own expectations through encouragement and tough love. Walter’s generosity extended to his community as he selflessly volunteered his time and resources for various projects, often preferring to operate quietly, avoiding praise for what he considered simply doing right by others.
At his core, Walter was a devoted family man whose impact will be forever felt by his family, that loves him dearly. His unwavering love and dedication knew no bounds as he relished every moment spent with loved ones. Among all the roles he embraced in life, being "G-Dad" to his beloved grandchildren held the most cherished place in his heart. Whether it was cheering for them from the sidelines, sitting through hours of dance and piano recitals or letting them paint his toenails, he did it with profound happiness. When he wasn’t spending time with them, he was sharing stories about them.
Walter's legacy is one of selflessness and unconditional love that leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of those who held him dear. His acts of sacrifice, provision, support, and boundless love will forever be engrained in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Walter’s memory is honored and kept alive by his loving wife of 52 years, Marilyn Lown; daughters, Melissa Wooten and Christina Glenn (Willis); grandchildren, Walter Reid Wooten, Brianna Powell, Mikayla Glenn, and Kiera Glenn; brother, Jeffery Lown (Beverly); sister, Beverly Spence; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Lown.
A heartfelt gratitude is extended to the compassionate 3rd floor ICU team at Lexington Medical Center for their exceptional care of Walter. Your unwavering compassion, kindness, and sincere regard not only for Walter but also for his family will forever hold a cherished place in our hearts.
