The community of Cayce mourns the loss of Nellie Hyman Anderson, a beloved resident who touched the lives of many. Nellie passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on January 6, 2025. Born on August 28, 1939, in Florence, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Mary Gossett and Nathan Hyman.
Nellie’s life was one of love, family, and community. Alongside her late husband, Bill Anderson, she co-owned Tony’s Pizza on Knox Abbott Drive, a local dining institution that served the Cayce community for more than 44 years. The restaurant became a cornerstone of the neighborhood, not just for its food but for the sense of connection and camaraderie it fostered among residents.
Nellie was known for her commanding yet warm presence in her neighborhood. Affectionately referred to as “Ms. Nellie,” she was well known to the children who grew up in the Cayce Avenues. She was quick to offer comfort or her quick wit and left a lasting impression on generations.
A devoted family woman, Nellie loved spending time with her sons, Johnny Anderson, and Anthony Anderson, as well as her extended family. She was an avid card player and a passionate sports fan, cheering enthusiastically for football and baseball teams during every season—especially when there was a friendly wager involved.
Nellie’s legacy lives on through her two sons, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, all of whom will cherish her memory and sage advice.
To honor Nellie, a visitation will be held on Monday, January 13, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM at the Chapel of Hope Mausoleum in Southland Memorial Gardens in West Columbia, South Carolina. A funeral service will follow at 12:30 PM to celebrate her remarkable life and legacy.
Nellie Hyman Anderson’s presence will be sorely missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. The Cayce community will forever remember “Ms. Nellie” as a symbol of strength, love, and kindness.
