Matthew Franklin Scaffe, 84, of West Columbia, SC, went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 13, 2024 surrounded by his family. Matthew was a loving husband, father, Papa and friend to many. He was born August 18, 1940 in Florence, SC. He was the son of the late Willie Matthew and Elsie Clyde Scaffe. He joined the U.S. Army on November 23, 1960 and served in Korea, Germany, Vietnam and state-side. He retired as a Sgt First Class on December 31, 1980. He was also an owner-operator for National Freight, before retiring after 28 years as a local tractor-trailer driver for Do It Best Hardware. After retirement, he spent countless hours woodworking making memories for his family and friends. If you mentioned building something, before you knew it, you had it. He attended Life Springs Church and was a devoted Christian. He loved his Gamecocks and passed this passion to many of his grands and great grands.
Matthew is survived by his wife of 59 years, Susan Scaffe; three children, Michael Scaffe (Jody), Kathy Price (Josh), James Scaffe (Robin); 11 grandchildren: Marty Hodge, Jessica Gleaton, Stephanie Neidecker (Lance), Andrew Gleaton, Brittany Litteral (Elliot), Sam Martin (Amanda), Amber Scaffe (Stephen), April Blanco (Sergio), Brandon Scaffe (Natalie), Breanna Shumpert (Will) and Brooke Scaffe; 13 great grandchildren and one on the way: Christian Thomas, Mason Fox, Matthew Gleaton, Cirroy Benson, Luxy Bell Sweeten, Aubree Martin, AJ Garvin, Paisley Litteral, Autumn Martin, Easton Litteral, Sergio Blanco, Jr., Haven Litteral, Eleanor Shumpert and Baby Girl Scaffe; brother-in-law, Willie Fagin, several nieces, a nephew and his fluffy companion, Sadie.
In addition to his parents, Matthew was preceded in death by his sisters, Carolyn Atkinson and Nellie Fagin and brother-in-law, Billy Atkinson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday October 18, 2024 at LifeSprings Church in Lexington, SC. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens in West Columbia.
