Margaret Kathleen Lawson Smith, 97, passed away on November 21, 2023. Mrs. Smith was born on April 30, 1926 in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was the oldest daughter of the late Corenna Parrott and Arthur N. Lawson. Mrs. Smith graduated from the University of Tennessee where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority.
In December, 1948, she married the love of her life, John V. Smith, Jr. They were married for 61 years before his death in 2010. Mrs. Smith worked for the University of South Carolina for 26 years before retiring in 1991. She was a member of Platt Springs United Methodist Church. She had a passion for reading, listening to music, painting, and above all else was her love for her family.
Surviving family members include her son, John V. Smith, III and his wife, Martha, of Kissimmee Florida; daughter, Kathleen Smith Moss and her husband, Carroll, of West Columbia; grandsons, John and wife, Jessica, Dean and wife, Shannon; granddaughters, Stephanie Amaker and husband, Ron, Jessica Jamison and husband, Eric, Jennifer Gostischa and husband, Mike; nine great grandchildren and 12 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, JV; son, George Arthur Smith; great granddaughter, Rachel Lynn Smith; brother, David A. Lawson; and sister, Anna Heiser.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Vaughn Barnick and his staff for many years of care, Dr. Brian Johnson and the 4th floor staff at Lexington Medical Center, and Lutheran Hospice for their care of Mrs. Smith.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 27, 2023 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel, 820 West Dunbar Road, West Columbia, SC. Burial will be private in Fort Jackson National Cemetery on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.
