WEST COLUMBIA - John David Futch, Jr., 73, of West Columbia, died Thursday, June 25, 2015. Born June 14, 1942 in Quincy, FL., he was the son of the late John David Futch Sr. and Dolly Mae Futch. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and founder/owner of The Music Store Inc. in Columbia, SC. As a boy he was an Eagle Scout, a scratch golfer, and an avid reader. He was on the golf and debate team at North Florida Junior College, attended Florence State Teacher's College (now University of North Alabama), and transferred to Florida State University to play on the golf team, and study English Literature and Philosophy. As a musician he enjoyed playing the guitar, banjo, and mandolin. He performed for President Jimmy Carter, and all over the southeastern United States from Florida to Virginia. He played on friend, James Dickey's screenplay "The Call of The Wild", was a member of South Carolina Bluegrass Society, on the board of Town Theatre, was a guest columnist for the Columbia Record with a "Bluegrassin" column called "Picker's Corner" where he taught readers how to play guitar in what is now known as the Nashville Number System. He was also a staunch University of South Carolina Gamecock fan.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Bobbie J. Futch of West Columbia; son, John D. “Trip” Futch, III (Torey) of Lexington; grandchildren, Zoey Isabella Futch, Alivia Elizabeth Futch, and McKenzie Marie Brown and sister, Linda L. Reining (Jim) of Birmingham, Alabama.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel, 820 West Dunbar Road, West Columbia, SC 29170. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A graveside service to follow at Southland Memorial Gardens. Flowers may be sent to Caughman-Harman Funeral Home at Southland Memorial Gardens or donations may be sent to the John D. Futch, Jr. Musical Memorial Scholarship for Children in care of National Bank of South Carolina, 1311 Pendleton Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
