WEST COLUMBIA – Funeral services for The Rev. Elford Bennett Roof, Sr., 82, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the church.
Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
Rev. Roof was born November 19, 1931 in West Columbia, SC and passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2014. He was a son of the late Henry Alton and Rubie Slyce Roof. Upon graduation from high school, he worked as a salesman for wholesale farming supplies. He then attended Newberry College and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary to prepare for his career in the ministry. He served the following congregations: Pomaria Lutheran Church, Pomaria, SC; Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pomaria, SC; St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Pomaria, SC; Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Lexington, SC; Trinity Lutheran Church, Saluda, SC and Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church, Batesburg-Leesville, SC. Interim Congregations served: Faith Lutheran Church, Newberry, SC; Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Prosperity, SC; St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Lexington, SC and Emmanuel Lutheran Church, West Columbia, SC. Pallbearers will be representatives of these congregations and Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Lutheran Men in Mission from Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Lutheran Clergy, Doctors and Staff of Lutheran Hospice and Raymond and Hampton Caughman.
Rev. Roof served some of the following organizations: South Carolina Luther League; Future Farmers of America; Newberry, Western and Saxe Gotha Districts of the Lutheran Synod (Dean); Board of the Lutheran Southern Theological Seminary; Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary Choir; Lexington Soil and Water Conservation District; Lexington Lions Club; Saluda Mental Health Services and Lexington Home Health Care Services. He was recently honored as Pastor Emeritus of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in West Columbia, SC and for serving 50 years as an ordained minister.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Jordan Roof; children, Joyce Roof Carter (Jeffrey), Sonya Roof and Bennett Roof; step-children, Joel Patsch, Jr. (Dalia), David (Elizabeth) Patsch and Aletha Patsch Corley (Jay); grandchildren, Joel, III (Jessica), Luz, Brandon, Sabrina, Josiah, Cara, Micah and Ezra Patsch and Daniel and Jonathan Corley; great-grandchild, Bradley Patsch; sisters, Freida Snelgrove (Jerry), Jane Burnett (Godfrey) and Mary Maner (Marion) and sister-in-law, Rochelle Roof. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Venona Roof and a brother, Harvey Alton (H. A.) Roof.
Memorials may be given to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Newberry College and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.
