On October 16, 2022, Dovie H. Brown passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 100. She was born April 19, 1922 in the Lone Ivy community of Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She was the youngest daughter of C.M. and Ella Victoria Hopkins. She was preceded in the death by two brothers, Sammy and Wesley Hopkins and three sisters, Mamie Wood, Mabel Pendleton and Josie Hopkins.
In December 1942 she married H. W. Brown (deceased). They were married for 61 years. She is the mother of five children: Larry Brown of Napoleon, OH, Harry Brown Jr. (deceased), Angela Livengood (Little River, SC), Evangeline Johnson (deceased) and Charles Gary Brown (Willard, NC). She has six grandchildren: William Swartz, Michael Brown, Jennifer Hylton, Michael Bradshaw, Mark Brown, and Kevin Brown; six great-grandchildren: Halie Bradshaw, Kaelen Brown, Caitlyn Bradshaw, Anna Elizabeth Brown, Jack William Brown and Grace Marie Brown. She lost one great-grandson, Marley Lion, when he was only 17 years of age.
Dovie was a minister’s wife and a devout Christian. She was an inspiration to everyone she met. Her real passion was her devotion to her family and the Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She attended Emmanuel College for two years in Franklin Springs, GA, where she met her husband and then finished her degree at Columbia College in Columbia, SC. She taught English and French in Fairfield Junior High for over 25 years. Prior to her teaching career, she worked at the Advocate Press as a proofreader and wrote Sunday school lessons for all churches within the denomination. She was editor of the McColl Messenger newspaper for three years. She was active in Women’s Ministries, serving as Director at both the Conference and Denominational levels.
She was always proud of the fact she came from the mountains of southwest Virginia and was able to see so much of the world and visit most countries in Europe, as well as the Holy Land. She was proud of her work and all she was able to accomplish.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 21, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel. A funeral will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Ebenezer Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial to follow at Southland Memorial Gardens.
