Marvin Fred Shields (96) a WW11 Navy Veteran passed away on October 2, 2017 in Grover Beach, CA. His wife, Rose Marie Bombola, preceded him in death in 1998. They had been married 54 years. Born December 29, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan.
He is survived by daughter, Sandra Smith her spouse Rick of Arroyo Grande, CA and son, Michael Shields and his spouse Cari of Fort Orford, Oregon. He has six grandchildren Tim, Matthew and Joshua Smith, Jason, Pierce & Dalton Shields. and 8 great grandchildren Lainee, Kai, Fletcher, Coral, Kayden and Tristen Smith and Benjamin and Alice Shields. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Irene Reske of Warren, Michigan and Virginia Prescott of Oceanside, California and numerous nieces & nephews.
After serving in the Navy, stationed in the South Pacific aboard the US Pensacola, Marvin became a firefighter in Michigan before moving to California and going into the lumber business. After retirement and moving to Exeter and then Visalia he worked as a senior volunteer for the Visalia Police Department for more than 20 years as well as the Senior Gleaners and delivering Meals on Wheels to shut-ins.
Marvin and his wife, Rose moved to Exeter in 1974 to be close to family and grandchildren. They were members of St. Mary's Catholic church and the Sons of Italy Lodge. Marvin was a member of Gateway Church in Visalia the past 10 years.
A graveside service will be held at Visalia Cemetery, 1300 W. Goshen Avenue in Visalia on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 t 11:30 a.m. .
