He married Maria M. Galindo in Corpus Christi, Texas on June 6th, 1957 and together they raised five children.
In 1959 the family relocated to Visalia, California.
Manuel was an amateur boxer for several years. He also maintained and ran the LJ Williams Theater for many years before landing the position of the premier Theater Custodian at COS for 15 years, retiring in 1993. A colleague had the following to say about Manuel when recalling his time in theater; “Anybody who worked on a theater production with him, will remember Manny with fondness and love. He was also a regular at Mearles Drive-in on his dinner break, he always had a seat waiting for him. Break-a-leg Manny on your final Curtain Call.” - Steve.
Manuel is survived by his sisters Minnie Ross, Viola Vacca, and Ellen Ryan; five children; Manuel Contreras Jr., Frank Contreras, Richard Contreras, Josie Pribbenow, and Aurthur R. Contreras. He had four grandchildren; Jessica Tyner, Rachel Contreras, April Lancaster, and Brandi Pribbenow. He also had four great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Manuel was preceded in death by his Mother Alice Acosta Thomas Slowick, Father Francisco Contreras, Sister Pat Escamilla, and Brother Robert Arthur Thomas.
