James Mack Philpot was born Oct. 17, 1928 in Lawrenceburg, TN, one of nine
children born to James Mack Sr. and Sarah Philpot. The family came to California in
1930. Jim attended Delta View Elementary School and was a 1946 graduate of Visalia
High School. An outstanding athlete, Jim stood out in basketball and baseball while at
Visalia High and then at COS. He was interested in all sports and he coached Babe Ruth teams in Visalia for 25 years.
A farmer at heart, Jim loved manicured yards, flower and trees and at one time.
raised pigs and steers for his own use. He planted vegetable gardens for his family and neighbors each year. Considered by some to be an authority on pruning trees, he often lent his expertise to friends and family.
A true family man, Jim was happiest when surrounded by his family and visiting
with his siblings. Known by his siblings as Junior, he drove to Tulare every Saturday
morning to have coffee and visit with his siblings.
He retired as a superintendent from Delta Vector Control District where he
worked for 40 years.
Jim is preceded in death by his daughter. Nancy Philpot Costa; his parents;
brothers, Thurman, Floyd and Ray; and sisters, Helen Van Hooser and Pellie Condon. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Geneva; brother, Carl Philpot and his wife
Shirley; and sisters, Peggy Henry and husband Harley, and Billie Anthony and husband Richard, all of Tulare; his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Micaela Philpot of Glen Ellen; and daughter, Claire Philpot and husband Tom Cottle of Visalia.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Devon Vasquez and husband George
of Visalia, Emerson Philpot of Paso Robles, Benjamin Philpot of Larkspur, Thomas Cottle II of Oceanside, and Joseph and Christopher Cottle of Visalia; great-grandchildren, Jordan Vasquez, Robert DeSoto IV and Marissa Vasquez. Robert helped his grandpa tend to his yard, learning from him along the way, and Marissa was the apple of her papa's eye.
A reception following the service will be held at the home of George and Devon
Vasquez. Burial will be private in Visalia Cemetery. For those who wish to do so,
donations in Jim's name can be made to the American Heart Association
