David was born on February 1, 1963, in Bangor, Maine to George and Grace Haney. His father was a pastor in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) and as a family they lived in Maine, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. David married Rebecca (Becky) DeHeer in 1983 in Hatboro, Pennsylvania. In 1985 he received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania while also working for the Prudential Insurance Company. In 1989 he began working for the Orthodox Presbyterian Church denomination. At the time of his death, he was simultaneously serving as the Director of Finance and Planned Giving, Manager of the OPC Loan Fund, and the Director of the recently established Committee for Ministerial Care. David received his Master’s Degree in Aging Services from the University of Maryland in 1985. He had a great love for people and was known for his servant leadership. After coordinating efforts to send teams to the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he was instrumental in developing a permanent disaster response arm of the OPC. He also served as a board member at Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa from 2012-2019, and as their Board Chair from October 2016 until his death.
David loved his work and was constantly traveling to OPC churches around the country. He also enjoyed golfing, taking care of his renovated farmhouse and 2 acres in New Jersey, traveling with his wife around the country with their fifth wheel, and playing with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Becky, his children Lauren (Daniel) Westra, Shelly (Tim) Wolff, Scott Haney, 4 grandchildren with the 5th on the way, his sister, Mary Underwood, and brothers, John Haney and Stephen Haney. He loved and lived for his God and Savior, and his family is certain that he was welcomed into heaven with the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
To honor David’s memory, contributions can be made payable to The Committee on Ministerial Care, specified for the Haney Memorial Fund, and sent to The Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 607 N. Easton Rd., Bldg. E, Willow Grove, PA 19090.
