Dearest On-Yun…
 It’s been so hard for me to let you go.  I miss talking to you! You are very wise and understanding.  You are always calm and have so much patience.  I love it when you teach me how to cook.  You know me, cooking is not my forte.  But you love my cooking every Monday and you would eat a lot too.  It made me feel so happy!
 Thank you so much for welcoming all of my puppies into your house…Fizzy, Sami, & Smoki, even my bird, Beeper without any hesitations.  I remember Yeh-Yeh would always think that they would pee on his carpet, but they never did and still don't.  You would comfort them and always ask if they ate or need water.  That means so much to me because I am an animal lover!
 You’re the best!  I will miss you, but I know in my heart that you and Yeh-Yeh are finally having a happy reunion!

Hi Mama,
Thank you for the past 31 years I got to spend with you, yet 31 years seems not nearly enough.  I miss you.  When I say that, I miss you more.  You have been and always will be such a significant person in my life. You will never disappear, because you are a big existence.  I wish we could stop time as if this moment passes like it hadn’t happened.  I know we won’t be able to see you, but I put my hands together silently.  Tomorrow doesn’t change, but I keep saying that wherever you are, I know you stay to watch over us even in heaven.  We will always think of you…be happy with Yeh-Yeh!

Our parents give us life.
Our grandparents give us a sense of who we are and where we came from.
As we say goodbye to you Mama, I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to know you, and for Ashli to have had you in her life for so many years.  It is becoming increasingly rare for a grandparent-grandchild relationship to be so long-lasting.  You are essential, an incredible matriarch, a leader in the family, and someone who is always present, and will continue to be present, as a part of our everyday lives.

Mom,
You taught us life lessons. You held the family together throughout the years.  Your words of wisdom still resonate whenever I need to make difficult decisions.  Zarah and I still use the cooking techniques you taught us.  Brittany and Kyle bring up old memories of times when you babysat them and they loved your food.  I am so happy you got to meet our granddaughter Zoey, your great granddaughter.

Hi Ma Ma,

Thank you for all the smiles and laughs throughout the years.  I’ll always remember not only you babysitting us at the family store but also going to your house before and after school, watching Barney and Arthur reruns on PBS, napping on the waterbed, family lunches or dinners of jook with potstickers and chow mein, shredded chicken tostadas, hoagie sandwiches, fan fan tong tong, char siu and dou sha  bao, tomato beef chow mein, and leftover fan jiu (you always made the best) in addition to dessert nights of look jai freshly picked from your trees and homemade vanilla and coffee ice cream.  I’ll cherish all the memories we had and hold them close to my heart. I wouldn’t be where I am today without you.  I love you , and I miss you.

Dearest Pau Pau also known P-A-U Square,

Saying goodbye to you was very hard but I know you are in a place of peace.  I imagine that you are now with Goon Goon in heaven nagging him or you two lounging on the sofa watching Chinese operas.  

I’ll always treasure the memories of coming over to your house, eating your delicious homemade Chinese food, and watching Chinese soap operas with you.  And who can’t forget the homemade ice cream you’d make and with all of us over to hang out?!  Your ice cream was simply made by still tasty.  I learned from you that putting peanuts on top of your ice cream is yummier and because of you, I do that sometimes.

Pau Pau’s house was my second home.  It was always such a comfort and a tradition to go over during the holidays, even on regular days as well.  There was never a dull moment with all of the grandchildren over and you making sure we were cared for.  You cared for us by asking us how school was and made sure we were not hungry.  

I’ll always remember you searching for cars that look like beetle bugs and when you do find one, you’d slug me on the shoulder and say “Beetle bug” in your adorable Chinese accent.  And what about you saying “sma-getti”?!  Or you saying “There your boyfriend” to me when a random person would walk by.  But my most favorite is you calling me “fay doot-doot.”  It might sound mean but I know it’s an endearing and affectionate name for me.  That is how you show you care for me.  I’ll miss you calling me “fay doot-doot.”  I’ll miss stroking your cheek and talking with you.  I’ll miss your presence overall.   

I’ll miss my Pau Pau forever.

I will forever remember and cherish our fe fe trips to Starbucks, and I always thought it was funny how you seemed to always run into someone you knew there. Mayor of V-town! I’ll never forget seeing your smile and hearing your laughter as soon as you walked into a room to greet everyone.

I miss sitting in your backyard to chat, while admiring your sago trees, beautiful lilies, and plentiful fruits and vegetables. I miss our coffee dates to Starbucks and sharing a coffee cake. I miss calling you to hear your voice, your laugh, and ask about your day.

I always remember you as a strong woman. Taking care of Bah Bah and Yeh Yeh. Those were the days. You had a busy life. You always taught me to respect everyone. I miss all your traditional Chinese foods and travel memories.  Mom, you had such a fantastic life. You have seen all your grandchildren and great grandchildren. What else can you ask for! I’m going to miss you coming to the house for dinner and family night. You always love to see my succulent plants. You can’t believe that my plants are doing well. Mom, I’m going to miss you terribly. Rest in peace. I love you.

Chee is my mother in-law. I never addressed her as my mother in-law, but as Mom. The years we were together were extraordinary. What I will miss most about her is having dinner with her at the house. In her later years, she didn’t cook quite as much.  Each of us – John and Cindy, Don and Zarah, would let her experience our success in cooking her dinner. For me, it was always fun. At least twice a week, I would call her and ask her how to make a certain dish. Each time, she would answer and I would ask, “Mom, how do I prepare this dish?” She was always excited to teach me. At the end of our phone conversation, she would always call me long aired, which in Chinese is “Cheung Hai”. I will always cherish those moments. Each time, I think about Cheung Hai, it makes me laugh.  Mom, you will always be with us and each dish we have, you are always here.
