

Devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, Captain Thomas W. Glickman, USN, Ret., 81, passed away on Aug. 3, 2010. Born in Oakland, California, on March 20, 1929, Capt. Glickman enlisted in the Navy in 1947 at age 17 and served his country for 41 years. In 1957, he attended Officer Candidate School and received his commission. He served 24 assignments throughout his career, including Staff, Commander River Patrol Force in Vietnam and Commanding Officer of the USS Rigel AF-58 and USS Kilauea AE-26. Among his 27 personal awards and decorations were the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals with Combat Distinguishing Devices, and two Purple Hearts.
After retiring from active duty in 1987, Capt. Glickman began a second career as a volunteer instructor for AARP's 55 Alive program. From 1990 to 2008, he taught more than 1,000 adult students and held several leadership positions with the organization at the state, regional and national level. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Apostles in Virginia Beach.
Capt. Glickman is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Patricia O. Glickman of Virginia Beach; two children, Cyndi Szurgot and her husband Chris Szurgot of Sammamish, Washington, and Ted Glickman and his wife Pam Glickman of Overland Park, Kansas; two grandchildren, Scott Hockman and Sydney Glickman; his brother Jerry Glickman and his wife Nancy Glickman of San Leandro, Ca. and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Agnes Glickman of Oakland, Ca.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 6 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, 23464. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Apostles, 1593 Lynnhaven Parkway, Virginia Beach, 23453.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Capt. Glickman’s honor to the Church of the Holy Apostles, the Disabled American Veterans or the American Lung Association.
