Ruth Kathleen Smith Holt passed away in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on January 2, 2012. She was a native of Brookneal, Virginia and the widow of Roy Lee Holt. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Robyn Jones and husband Bob; son, Roy Kimball Holt and wife Tammy; three grandchildren, Jason Bacharach, Krystal Lee Holt and Jordan Greer Holt, all of Virginia Beach; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jeffery Johnson; sister, Adele Crews of Lynchburg, VA; and two brothers, Lyle and Larry Smith of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by her loving companion Vincent Barresi of Virginia Beach.
She was a member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church. Also a life member of The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and held many offices in the Auxiliary. Ruth spent many years as an advocate of the Disabled Veterans and worked tirelessly on their behalf. She was instrumental in organizing the Auxiliary, and served as its first commander and as treasurer for twenty years. Ruth held offices in the Department of Virginia DAVA. She was a member of the “Cats” which is the elite membership of the DAV Auxiliary and held many offices in this organization. Ruth was the editor of the “Pacesetter” which is the newsletter of Chapter 20 in Virginia Beach for many years.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 5th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 6th at 7:00 PM in the funeral home conducted by Dr. Prentis McGoldrick. Burial will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7th at 1:00 PM in Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg, VA.
