Robert “Spencer” Hill, Sr., 86, passed away Feb 5, 2014. Mr. Hill was born in Gold Hill, NC. on September 27, 1927.
Spencer is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary E. Hill; four sons, Bobby Hill (Terry), Charlie Hill (Tracy), Harold Hill (Karen) and Scott Hill (Kim); grandchildren, Becky Hill, Curtis Hill (Yen), Kevin Hill (Tatiana), Christopher Hill, Alexandria Hill (Chris), and Danielle Hill; great granddaughter Ruby; one sister Myrtle Morgan (Nick) and two brothers, Grant Hill (Zela), and Arlie Hill.
Spencer moved to Princess Anne County with his parents after World War II where he and his father joined the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 613. There they both served many years and once served as President of the Local 613. While with Local 613 he worked on many notable heavy construction projects including Scope, Downtown and Midtown Tunnels, Southside entrance to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, but it was his skill as an interior wood craftsman for which he was noted for and was sought out by many builders. Spencer often spoke of his work he performed at the Historic Wells Theatre, Thoroughgood House and the Willoughby Baylor House. He retired as Journeyman Carpenter and continued his passion of hunting and raising Brittney Spaniel bird dogs as a member of the Tidewater Brittney Club where he also served in several positions including President. Spencer was a Life Member of the Davis Corner Volunteer Fire Department where he started in 1959 and served as an Engineer. He served into the early seventies when Va. Beach then transitioned into a combination paid/volunteer department.
Spencer was a wonderful father, awesome grandfather and even better friend. He had a happy go lucky attitude and would quickly make friends out of any stranger he met. Even the nurses commented on how he was their favorite patient and even up to his last few minutes of life he did not have a complaint in the world.
The family will receive friends at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home from 6 to 8 pm on Sunday, Feb. 9. The funeral service will be conducted at 10 am Monday, Feb. 10, in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Davis Corner Volunteer Rescue Squad www.DCVRS.org or Vigilant Watch, Inc. www.vigilantwatchinc.org.
