Born on March 31, 1925 in Lexington, VA to Eva Evelyn and Thomas Lafayette Wills, John "JC" Wills was one of seven brothers who quickly made their mark on their wider community both for their appetite for mischief and duty to country.
At the onset of World War II, five brothers served in the military, with JC serving in the Navy as an Armed Guardsman, escorting soldiers across the Atlantic eight times. JC met Betty Young in Broad Creek Village and they married on her 19th birthday in 1947. Their marriage for over 73 years until his death is a true testament to lasting commitment and an inspiration to future generations.
Upon returning home from the war, JC opened Wills Auto Upholstery which he owned and operated for over 50 years. JC and Betty started their family in Virginia Beach which included their children Johnny, Charlene, and Laurie, and countless stray dogs and cats that JC couldn't bear to turn away. As a devoted member of Bayside Baptist Church for over 60 years, JC served in many leadership roles with his favorite being a Royal Ambassadors Leader while his son Johnny was part of the class. An avid car enthusiast, JC was an active member of the Cape Henry Model A Club where he and Betty made lifelong friends.
Throughout his full life, JC's sense of commitment was matched by his sense of humor and style. Never without a witty remark and a sly smile, JC was known for his appreciation of how a feathered hat could complete an outfit and the value of flashy socks on any occasion. A card-carrying member of the Optimist Club, he walked with gratitude and loved to refer to his home as “paradise” and “Wills Acre”. All that had the pleasure to walk in his garden knew about his love for gardening. As a practicing folk artist, his home and workshop are filled with countless wood carvings, sculptures, and installations, all of which serve as a memorial to his resourcefulness and creative spirit.
JC is survived by his brother, Fred, and wife, Betty Wills. His children and their spouses include Johnny and Barbara Wills, Charlene Bryant, Laurie and Jeffrey Francis. His grandchildren and their spouses include Sean Wills, Emily and Thomas McNeny, Ellen Bryant, Shelly and Warren Garnham, Wills and Ali Francis, and Wesley Francis. His great-grandchildren include Samuel and Barrett McNeny, and Forrest Garnham.
Visitation is Wednesday, June 16th from 5-7pm at Rosewood Memorial Park and the funeral will be held at Bayside Baptist Church on June 17th at 11:00am with graveside service and reception to follow. All are welcome. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.kellumfuneralhome.com.
