John “Jack” Joseph Whalen Jr., 91, passed away peacefully while visiting at his daughters home on December 8, 2021 in Virginia Beach, Va. He was born May 13, 1930 in South Buffalo (1st Ward) to John J. and Lillian G. (Schlatterer) Whalen. He was predeceased by his loving wife Margie in 1999. His parents, John J. and Lillian G. Whalen; his sister, Mary Braunscheidel and brother, Francis X Whalen and his son-in- law Edward Romm.
John resided in Spanish Lakes, Ft. Pierce, FL after rearing his children in Freehold, NJ. He graduated Canisius College with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army as a Medic in Germany where he married Margaret E. Williams and started their family. After returning to the United States they settled in the Buffalo area where their family continued to grow. His job at Stauffer Chemical (later known as Wacker Chemical) moved them to New Jersey and Michigan eventually settling back in New Jersey. He was a member of the American Legion. Jack served as a Eucharistic minister at St. Rose of Lima Church in Freehold and later at St. Helens in Vero Beach, FL.
He is survived by his children John M (Dolores), Susan Hall, Sheila Romm, Sharon Herlan (Bill), Betsy Donnelly (John). His Grandchildren, John M Whalen, Melissa G Bonczek (Steve), Brent Hall, James Herlan, Elizabeth Herlan-Campbell (Kevin), Ashley Hall, Kate Romm, Kevin Romm (Ali), Amanda Donnelly and Johnny Donnelly. His Great Grandchildren Christian Bonczek, Tesa Herlan, Sean Bonczek, Stella Hall, Serena Campbell. His sisters Dolores Sullivan, Teresa Donahue, Maureen Robinson, Monica Klein.
Following his funeral service in Virginia Beach at The Church of the Ascension and Smith and Williams Funeral Home his final resting place will be with his beloved Margie in Holmdel at the Holmdel Mausoleum.
