Lockwood, John David of Virginia Beach, VA, walked through the gates of Heaven to be with the Lord on March 3, 2020 while surrounded by his wife, Donna, children, John Charles and Nicholas, and father, Gene Lockwood, in Virginia Beach, VA after a long battle with esophageal cancer.
John David Lockwood was born at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA to Gene and Veronica Lockwood on August 29, 1962. He was raised in Buxton, NC, Long Island, NY, Groton, CT, and mostly in Virginia Beach, VA. He attended Cox High School but earned a GED after enlisting in the United States Army at age 17. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. While in the Army, he did tours in Germany and Italy. He worked as a Windshield Installer for many years. While in that capacity, he met his future wife, Donna J. Aheimer in 1989, and married her in Hampton, VA on June 30, 1990. They had two children, John Charles and Nicholas Lockwood. He attended Tidewater Community College and completed the Tractor Trailer Certificate Program with Honors, obtained a Commercial Driver’s License and became a Professional Truck Driver. He worked many years for Warrior Express out of Charles City, VA and earned a 5 year Professional Driver Safety Award. He later worked for Prompt Express of Watertown, SD and traveled mostly in the Mid-West and West Coast. Finally, he transitioned to West Service Center so he could do mostly local driving as he wanted to be home to see his grandchildren grow up. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and once earned a fishing citation.
John David is survived by his wife, Donna J. Aheimer-Lockwood, and their children: John Charles Lockwood and his wife, Megan, and Nicholas Ronald Lockwood. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Mason Criger and Marleigh Lockwood. He was predeceased by his mother, Veronica M. Lockwood and a brother-in-law, Gary Aheimer. Furthermore, he is survived by his father, Gene Lockwood, a brother, Gerald Hines, and sisters, Denise and Donna Lockwood. He is also survived by his in-laws, Ronald and Joanne Aheimer, a brother-in-law, Paul Aheimer and his wife, Kim, and a sister-in-law, Martha Aheimer. He is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. Finally, John David had many close friends that he is survived by throughout the continental United States and even overseas. At this time, the family would like to express “a special thank you” to Deborah and Gary McConnell, Deborah Blount, and John and Kathy Cunningham.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. at Smith and Williams Funeral Home/Kempsville Location located at 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. In accordance with John David’s wishes, he will be cremated in advance of the Memorial Service and his ashes will be scattered in the Ocean in an area adjacent to Fort Story where he grew up at a date in the future.
