John Patrick Huban, age 61 of Virginia Beach passed away after a valiant battle with cancer on May 18, 2015 at 7:50pm. He was preceded in death by his loving parents Johnnie Walter Patrick and Frances Arlene (Leach) Huban. He left behind three younger brothers, four adoring children, their spouses, a niece, six grandchildren and many lifelong friends.
John was born on June 17, 1953 in Norfolk, VA. His father was a US Navy veteran who served in the WWII, Korean and Vietnam wars. His mother was a loving matriarch whom guided the family through multiple deployments and instilled the virtues which John lived by and his brothers James, Joseph and Timothy still practice to this day. The Huban Children were all graduates of St Pius X and Norfolk Catholic High School.
John married Sheryl Ann Collins on January 4, 1975 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. They enjoyed twenty five years of matrimony and raised their four children, Loretta Arlene Huban, Elizabeth Ann Riordan, Jennifer Lynn Shepherd and John Joseph Spurgeon Huban together. Their time together was spent living in Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
John pursued a career as a master electrician. A member of IBEW Local Union 80, John retired in 2003. After retirement John served his community as a friend of Bill W. Where he was able to reflect, gain insight and offer guidance. He had a love for all things outdoors including hunting, fishing, boating and gardening. He was an avid collector of coins and firearms and enjoyed reading, movies, prayer and time with his family.
John's greatest joy came when his family began to grow. Through marriage and unity of his children, his love reached many. Those blessed with the honor to call him Dad are Dennis Medina Riordan, Whitney Allen Shepherd and Mike Dennis Butler. Those blessed with unimaginable pride and honor to call him Papa are Rianna Crisanta Riordan, Jay Allen Shepherd, Loghan Medina Riordan, Alexander James Huban, Trinity Aris Riordan and Kolton Dane Shepherd. John was an amazing example of patience, forgiveness and love.
John’s family will receive friends on Monday, May 25, 2015 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of memorial flowers, donations may be made to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters or The American Cancer Society. Friends may also offer condolences at www.kellumfuneral.com.
