Mr. Tompkins was born in Richmond, Virginia and graduated from John Marshall High School and the University of Richmond. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific. He retired as Director of Transportation at Potash Company of America in New York and also Assistant Director of the Virginia State Corporation Commission, Division of Railroad Regulation. He served as Instructor in the University of Richmond Evening Division and was a former President of the Richmond Traffic Club. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach.
He was preceded in death by his wife Anne Glazebrook Tompkins and his brother Henry Fitzhugh Tompkins, Jr. Survivors include three children: James L. Tompkins, M.D. and wife Beverly, Nancy T. Linkous and husband Barry, Edmund F. Tompkins and wife Judy; seven grandchildren: Stephanie Whitacre, O.D. and husband Garth, Betsy Mills and husband Taylor, Ashley Walter and husband Kevin, Kelley Geller and husband Chris, Katherine Swain and husband Wesley, Mandy Tompkins, Lucas Tompkins; seven great-grandchildren: Morgan Walter, Emily Walter, Rebecca Mills, Emily Mills, Michael Walter, Jacob Walter, Samantha Swain; sister Mary T. Lett and extended family.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 11:30 a.m. at Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Richmond, VA. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2:00 p.m. at Westminster Canterbury, 3100 Shore Dr., Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Fellowship Fund at Westminster Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay or First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach.
