Obituary of James Anthony Monaco
James Anthony Monaco, 85, of Virginia Beach, went to be with his Lord Jesus on March 31, 2014 at his residence. He was surrounded by his family who loved him immensely. Jim was born in Long Island City, NY, the son of the late James and Lena Monaco. He attended St. Michaels College in Winoski Park, VT and proudly defended his country serving for the United States Army during the Korean War. He went on to law school at Boston College and then moved to Virginia Beach where he joined his father's career as a homebuilder. He built much more than houses, as evidenced by the legacy he leaves behind. He was a gentle soul, filled with passionate faith, love and adoration for his family. He was a proud member of Beach Fellowship church and found great joy serving within the homeless ministry. He was an inspiring leader, teacher of the Word, servant and a true lover of people. Jim was an extraordinarily devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and his greatest priority was his family. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of sixty years, Martha Ann Monaco. The love they shared was palpable and a gift for all to see. Jim is also survived by his six children, Cheryl Ann Furbee (David), MaryAlice Bjorkman (Raymond), Roberta Washington (James), James Monaco (Cathy), Ann Marie Robinson, Sandra Maltry (John); his fourteen grandchildren - Rachel Winesett (Keith), Christopher Bjorkman (Mary Ann), David Furbee (Shannon), Natalie Volsky (Peter), Ashley Love (Matt), Kyle Bjorkman, Jessica Washington, James Washington, Christina Monaco, Anthony Monaco, Morgan Robinson, Ryan Robinson, Samuel Maltry and Nathan Maltry; and his two great-grandchildren - Tristen and Levi Winesett. Jim was also very excited to be welcoming two new great-granddaughters this summer. Jim left an impression on all who knew him, as he selflessly poured himself out to all. His faith was inspiring, his laughter was contagious and his mere presence alone was comforting. Words cannot express how much he will be missed. The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to Dr. Richard Curulla and to Rhonda and Stephanie with Heartland Hospice for their wonderful care and support during Jim's final days. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 5th at 1:00pm at Beach Fellowship Church at 1817 General Booth Blvd. in Virginia Beach with Pastor Ray Bjorkman officiating. The family will also receive guests Friday, April 4th, between 6:00 and 8:00pm at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and Edmundite Missions.
