He is predeceased by his brothers Willie Ray Jones and Henry Lee Jones and his sister, Rose Nell Brown and her husband Charles Brown.
He and his family relocated to New York City in 1950. James attended school in the New York City public school system.
James married Laura Gravenhise of Brooklyn, NY on June 22, 1963. He worked at York College of CUNY for several years and retired in 1998. He and Laura moved to Virginia Beach in January 1999.
He was an avid bowler and golfer. Jimmy was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. He enjoyed watching westerns and women's tennis. Jimmy loved people and they loved him. He was a sharp dresser (even in his undies). In his latter years he attended the Princess Anne Recreation Center where he made several friends including the late Art Johnston. Jimmy loved to go on cruises and drink his Johnny Walker Red.
He leaves to mourn his wife of over 50 years, Laura, and their daughter, Thea, sisters-in law, Donna and Beatrice Jones, and a host of family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Princess Anne Memorial Park.
