Obituary of James Bertrand Cheatham
James “Bert” Bertrand Cheatham bravely battled chronic medical illnesses, and he peacefully succumbed to the fight on Sunday, March 19th at home in VA Beach while surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his wonderful parents, Roy and Myrtle Cheatham. Bert leaves behind his wife, Allie, after 38 happy years of marriage. He was the proud, loving father to his two children, Dr. Megan Cheatham and Matthew Cheatham. He deeply cared for his son-in-law (Barry Byers) and daughter-in-law (Jessica Abbott). His grandchildren were the light of his life. Desmond and Opal (Matt & Jess) and Olivia (Megan & Barry) will dearly miss their granddaddy, who endlessly read them books and taught them about nature. He also enjoyed a lifetime of good dogs who were members of the family. He was in the hearts of many other caring family members, neighbors, friends, and Masonic brothers. Bert enjoyed life. His greatest pleasure was being a dad, and he reliably accompanied his kids on countless school field trips, concerts, and sports activities. He was active with the Princess Anne Masonic Lodge #25 for 47 years and was proud to be a Past Master Mason and coach. He was a Vietnam-era Navy Veteran, and was appreciative of the great care he received through the VA. He was a member of Tall Cedars, a past president of the finance club at ODU, and was previously a church elder, Shriner, and member of the Scottish Rite. Bert’s humor, easy smiles, caring nature, and dependability will be dearly missed by those who knew him. Bert’s family will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest and valuing all the memories made with him. Per Bert’s wishes, there will not be a service, but his family will accept visitors and calls. Family can provide information on donations in lieu of flowers if interested. Bert requested those who care about him spread joy by completing a random act of kindness.
