Irving Lee Allen passed away Monday afternoon, April 17, after a battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by family when he passed. The family expresses their deep appreciation for the many aides and nurses who helped care for him.
A native of Norfolk, Virginia, he was the son of the late Ravenell Cleveland Allen and Iola Burgess Allen. He was a longtime resident of Virginia Beach. He attended Princess Anne High School and worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to garden, and he nurtured a lifelong love for the Chesapeake Bay.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Alan Ray Allen (Mary Catherine Holifield Allen) and his beloved Havanese dog Wusp.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Bettie Gray Allen; brother, Ravenell Cleveland Allen, Jr.; sons, Irving Lee Allen, Jr., Mark Allen and Kenneth Allen; stepson, William Edward Culverhouse, Jr. (Michael John Neimoyer); grandchildren, Bobby Lee Allen (Samantha Gibbs Allen) and Sarah Allen Holt (Jeffrey Bodean Holt); and several nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Eastern Shore Chapel, 2020 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 24.
