I did not remember the rate of Bill, he was "the Cob". He never sent a non- quail up for testing to be qualified as long as I was Engineer on board Corporal. Each individual had done all homework and prac fac to be eligible for SS designation. He was a mentor to all crew members, both Officer and Enlisted. He will be missed.

I worked with Bill at Henzie Services in Norfolk for a couple years in the early 90s, we had some good times together and both succeed in giving the other one a hard time! I was sorry to read of his departure, may he Rest In Peace.

Bill Ervin was "COB"  (chief of the boat) when I first reported aboard USS Corporal in August 1969. First thing he said to me was "you still wearing those boots?!"  The Friday before I reported aboard I was written up for wearing unauthorized footwear on the upper base. He was a very fair Chief and was well respected by the entire crew. Sailor rest your oar.

I have not met a more decent, loyal and honest man than Bill Ervin. He was Chief of the Boat when I had command of of USS Corporal (SS346) from 1968 to 1970. I placed my complete reliance on his estimate of a situation and was confident that he would do the right thing.

Jean, you were the ideal partner for Bill and must accept some responsibility for his performance as a man.

We will miss him.

Home at last !  What a glad reunion he is having meeting all of his relatives and preparing for our arrival.
We must be related grandfather lived in Oakland, MD - Joseph W. Ervin died unexpectantly age the age of 66, my father, Joseph W. Ervin, Elkins, WV died unexpectantly at the age of 51. My prayer, your family will feel the loving arms of Jesus and of your friends.  Sandy (Upper Black Eddy PA)
