George F. “Skeeter” Reed, 94, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2013. Born on Sept. 22, 1918, Skeeter was the youngest of four children born to Frances Colenda Reed and Joshua David Reed. He was a lifetime resident of Norfolk. He is preceded in death by his wife of more than 69 years, Ena Taylor Reed.
He graduated from Maury High School in 1937 where he played shortstop on the baseball team. It was at Maury that he met Ena. They were married in 1943. After graduating, he joined the Virginia National Guard. Called to active duty in 1941, he entered as a private and rose to the rank of Captain during World War II. He continued to serve in the Active Army Reserve retiring in 1978 as a Lt. Colonel.
Between Maury and the service, he went to work at Charles W. Priddy & Co./Norfolk Bag as an office boy. After retirement from the service, he returned to Priddy & Co. rising to position of President and Chairman of the board.
Skeeter is survived by his three children, Jeff Reed, Kerry Taylor Reed and his wife Patricia, and Cynthia Reed Stanley; three grandchildren, Cristen Cross, and Taylor and Tiffany Reed; one great-grandson Kai; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 5767 Sellger Drive, Norfolk, VA.
