Obituary of Cheryl Elaine Burns
Cheryl Elaine Burns passed away August 6, 2015 at Autumn Care Nursing Center in Chesapeake, VA surrounded by her family. A member of Haygood United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, VA, Cheryl was born September 17, 1944 in Portland, Maine and a graduate of Deering High School. She was predeceased in death by her loving husband of 41 years, Robert H Burns, her parents James and Marilyn Norton, and sister-in-law Rose Marie Wood. After driving a school bus for countless children of every age for over 20 years, she retired from Virginia Beach City Public Schools. She had a keen sense of direction, and had a knack for remembering faces years after her “kids” had graduated. She has been called a kind and caring person who would help anyone in need and she was often an adopted mom to many of her own children’s friends. She is survived by her son, Shawn Burns and wife Kristen, daughter Rebecca Young and husband Kenny,sister Linda Tucker; her grandchildren Lindsay and Ryan Burns, brother-in-law Ronald Burns and wife Mary, brother-in-law Scott Wood, sister-in-law Mary Ellen Kaes, sister-in-law Sue Ann McCormack and husband Greg, a number nieces and nephews, as well as extended family. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 10, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, located at 4889 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach, and a service will be held Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Haygood United Methodist Church, 4713 Haygood Rd, Virginia Beach, VA. Burial services will be held on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 12PM at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland, Maine. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made to the American Cancer Society (https://donate.cancer.org/index) or Susan G. Komen (http://ww5.komen.org/Donate/DonateOnline.html). The family would like to extend their thanks to the nurses and staff at Autumn Care Chesapeake who provided compassionate service to Cheryl while in their care.
