John was born August 29,1962 in Fontana, California to Bernard Conrad Burke and Beverly Anne (Pete) Whittaker. John graduated from Mira Loma High School, Sacramento, CA in 1981 and began serving his country in the Army for six years. John had a great love for learning and went to school in some capacity most of his life attaining a Bachelors of Science in Accounting, a Bachelors of Arts in Management Information Systems from Cal State San Bernardino, and a Masters in Business Administration from University of Phoenix. After working in sales for several years, John decided to put his love of education to the test and started the Teacher Credentialing Program from CalStateTeach, Los Angeles Region. He was currently enrolled in the Single Subject Credentialing Program at the University of Massachusetts Global - Victorville Campus to become a certified teacher. John started substitute teaching in the Oro Grande School District at Riverside Prep and Mojave River Academy in 2015 until his passing.
John loved cooking, biking, bowling, golf, shooting pool, karaoke, the outdoors and being with friends. He loved going to the Angels baseball games and watching his favorite football team, the 49ers.
He was a strong advocate in cancer awareness, fighting depression and dementia. He loved animals and will be sorely missed by his two cats Bo and Butter aka Butt.
He is survived by his mother Beverly Whittaker, Las Vegas, NV; step-mother Rachel Burke of Roseville, CA; brother David Burke (Ilene), Potsdam, NY; sisters Launa Barbosa (Tom), Las Vegas, NV; Laura Geoia (Paul), Janesville, CA and Marla Whittaker, Las Vegas NV. He is also survived by six nieces, Casandra Quintana (Claudio), Megan and Kaitlin Burke, Gabriella, Isabella (Geoia) Davenport, Arianna Geoia and two great-nieces, Aurelia and Luana Quintana.
John was preceded in death by his father Bernard Burke, step-father Cecil Whittaker, brother James Burke and sister Debra Miller.
Services will be held on February 13, 2023 at 1:00 PM with military honors at Desert View Funeral Home, 11478 Amargosa Rd, Victorville, CA 92392. A private interment will be held at Riverside National Cemetery.
