Hazel Inez Verrier Lewis, 88, of Summit Valley, California, died peacefully at home on Sunday May 1, 2016. Hazel, the third child of Edmund Verrier and Mary Dell Gedney, was born July 30, 1927 in Ray, Arizona, where she went to grade school until 9 years old. The family moved to Mesa, Arizona after her father passed away. She continued her education in the Mesa schools through high school. While in high school she met Wilferd Lewis at the skating rink in Mesa, AZ. They fell in love and married on April 2, 1944 in Florence, Arizona. They raised their family of five children, Debbie, Candy, Mike, Vicki, and Ed, in Tempe, Arizona. While raising her family she was involved in Cub Scouts, Campfire Girls, competitive swimming and other school activities. The summer of 1962 the family moved to Rosemead, California. At the young age of 35, she became a grandmother. She embraced this role and loved making crafts, clothes, gifts and toys for her grandchildren for most of her life. When they moved to Hesperia in 1989 she even dedicated one room of her new house just for making her crafts. As her grandchildren grew they looked forward to going to grandma’s house to make crafts and paint birdhouses with her. In her later years her joy was going into town to Taco Bell and visiting her dear friends, her “Taco Belles”. It became the highlight of her week. Hazel was a very special woman with a great smile, warm heart and positive attitude. Her laughter and smile brought joy to every person she met. Her unconditional love was felt by everyone who knew her. Hazel is survived by her five children: Debbie Richardson (Gary), Candy McIntosh Lilly (Dan), Mike Lewis, Vicki Bonomo (Chris), Ed Lewis (Penny). 25 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Wilferd B. Lewis.
