Vernell Barnes Mathis, 79, of Victoria, passed away peacefully, Sunday, May 15, 2016 surrounded by her family. Vernell was born December 12, 1936 in Yorktown to the late Dorse and Bernice Barefield Barnes, Sr. Vernell was the founding member of the BMW Riding Club and was very active in the Victoria Senior Citizens AARP Chapter. Vernell worked for Twin Pines Nursing and Rehab for 40 years as an aide and Medication Aide.
Vernell is survived by her daughter, Mary Nell Fillmore of Victoria; sons, R.A. Mathis, III, (Joyce) of Edna, James W. Mathis (Robin) of Victoria; sisters, Ruth Ella Boyd (William) of San Antonio, Lucy Taylor of San Antonio, Maggie Garley of Victoria, Patsy Green (A.B.) of Runge; brothers, Dorse Barnes Jr., (Linda) of Victoria and James Barnes of San Antonio. Vernell also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews to cherish her memory.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, R.A. Mathis, Jr.; son, Maurice Mathis, Sr.; sister, Pearl Taylor; brothers, J.P. Barnes and Robin Barnes.
A Visitation for friends and family will be held, Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Rosewood Funeral Chapels from 5-8 PM.
A Funeral service will be held, Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 10 AM at The College Church of Christ with burial immediately following at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Fillmore, Brian Fillmore, Jason Fillmore, Maurice Mathis, Jr., Jonathan Mathis, Robert James Mathis, Jason Austin and Jason Burmeister.
