Kay graduated from Nazareth Academy and then earned a B.A. and master’s degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. While at Trinity, she was a member of the Spurs sorority. She was also a graduate of the Ben Shaw Modeling School.
Kay taught elementary school in San Antonio for several years before returning to Victoria and teaching for VISD for thirty years. After retirement, she tutored over forty children with dyslexia. She maintained her interest in dyslexia and autism by attending workshops on the subjects into her eighties.
She was an avid needlepointer and created kneelers, paraments, chairs and rugs for over one hundred churches including her beloved First Presbyterian. She loved creating unique Christmas stockings for many friends. She was pleased to have created an ornament for the White House Christmas tree that now is in the Smithsonian Museum.
Kay was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Victoria, Texas where she served in multiple capacities. She was a past member of Morning Study Club, a sustaining member of the Junior League and a retired member of Azalea Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her foster mother, Lorena Gregg and by her husband, Donald Austin Edwards. She is survived by her daughter, Julia Austin Edwards, her son, Travis Gregg Edwards, his wife Christy and her very greatest love, her granddaughter, Harper Claire Edwards.
A celebration of Katherine's life will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Private family burial will be held at Thomaston Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Lane Keller, William Motley, Jack Price, Charles Rader, Thomas Sage, and Reese Wilson.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of South Texas or First Presbyterian Church.
