James Douglas Simmons, 77 of Victoria passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. He was born March 8, 1944 in San Augustine, TX to Melvin and Dolly Robinson Simmons. James retired from the U.S. Navy as a Senior Chief Officer in 1991 and then worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier until he retired in 2013.
He is survived by his wife, Linda McCord Simmons; children, Lana Sutherland and James D. Simmons, Jr.; brother, Charles (Nancy) Simmons of Buna, TX; brother-in-law, Lester Lott of Vidor and a sister-in-law, Kay Simmons of Buna. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sisters, Lydia (Grady) Vassar, Peggy Lott and a brother, Harold Simmons.
James enjoyed gambling in Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, Tunica, Biloxi, Las Vegas and Laughlin. He loved to play Mississippi Stud and High Card Flush and was generally good at it! He loved watching the Houston Astros, Houston Oilers (back in the day!), Houston Rockets and the Houston Texans. After he retired from the Navy, golfing was his passion and usually golfed most weekdays with the “Badgett group”.
Visitation will be 1 PM Thursday, May 6, 2021 at Rosewood Funeral Chapel with a memorial service to be held 2 PM with Deacon Steve Borowicz officiating. At the conclusion of the memorial service full military honors under the auspices of Victoria Veterans Council will be conducted. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Inez.
