Helen A. Haas Polk Hecox, 97, died January 26, 2015, at the Wesleyan Nursing Home in Georgetown, Texas. She was born September 26, 1917 in Cloverport, Kentucky, the daughter of William Walter Farnsworth and Anna Johnson Farnsworth. She grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and moved to Victoria in 1952 where she lived for 59 years before moving to Georgetown in 2011 to be near family.
Helen is predeceased by her parents, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, first husband of 42 years, Edwin Haas; second husband of 8 years, James K. Polk; and third husband of 16 years, Donald Rexford Hecox.
She is survived by 2 children: son, Edwin W. Haas and wife, Margaret of Georgetown, and daughter, Marilyn Haas Curtis and husband, Richard W. Curtis of Bertram, Texas; one granddaughter: Melinda Haas Byrne and husband, Russell of Houston; and numerous nieces & nephews.
She is also survived by step-children: James Rexford Hecox and wife, Anna of Converse; Thomas William Hecox of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Janet Hecox Toombs of North Little Rock, Arkansas; Edelweiss Polk Astrahan; Angie Polk Richmond and husband, Edwin of San Antonio, as well as numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.
Helen enjoyed meeting people and made many friends throughout her career in real estate that spanned over 25 years in Victoria.
Say the word “travel” and she was ready to go. She traveled widely visiting over 28 world countries. She loved cooking and “reading” cookbooks, shopping, ballroom dancing, bridge and remembering and singing songs from the old days.
Helen was an encourager and inspired others. She instilled the value of a good education in her children. She loved reading good books. After her sight failed, she benefited and found great pleasure in the Talking Book Program for many years.
She was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Victoria and a proud 50 year plus member of the Order of Eastern Star, Violet Chapter #158 in Victoria. She also took part in Morning Study Club, Victoria Realtors Association, and served as president of the Soroptimist Club.
The family is grateful to the Wesleyan Homes in Georgetown that provided exemplary care for her from assisted living, to memory care, rest home and Hospice the last 3 ½ years of her life.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm -8:00 pm Thursday, January 29, 2015, at Rosewood Funeral Chapel. The Funeral Service will be held 2:00 pm Friday, January 30, 2015, Rosewood Chapel in Victoria with the Rev. Tim Williams and participation of the Order of Eastern Star. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Victoria.
Helen’s family wishes to thank all who touched her life, giving her companionship, love, good humor, joy and encouragement throughout her golden years.
