Gary Mac Underwood, 90 of Victoria passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2022. He was born July 8, 1932 in Alhambra, CA to Mac and Willie Pirtle Underwood. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and utilized the G.I. Bill for his post-secondary education, attending Texas A&I in Kingsville and later Texas A&M in College Station. Dr. Gary Underwood was an professor for 52 years with Victoria College for Biology and Microbiology courses, instructing many of those going into the medical profession, and often recognized and admired for his teaching ability. Gary was also a dedicated Christian, serving as an elder for over 30 years with the Central Church of Christ in Victoria.
Gary is survived by his wife, Marylyn Hicks Underwood; daughter, Kristin Joyce Underwood of Victoria; sons, Gary Glenn Underwood (Shelly) of Hutto, Dr. Dale Lynn Underwood (Karlene) of Corpus Christi, David Cleve Underwood (Heather) of San Marcos; sisters, Barbara Dempsey of Vivian, LA, Nancy Kauk of Nacogdoches,TX; Eva Bickham of Mt. Pleasant, TX; brothers, Sonny Bickham of Benton, LA; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Joel Scott Underwood; sister, Billie Jean Garsee and a brother, Glenn Bickham.
Funeral services will be 1 PM on Sunday August 28, 2022 at Central Church of Christ, 801 E. Airline. Graveside services with full military honors under the auspices of the Victoria Veterans Council will be Monday, August 29, 2022 at 10 AM at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Dr. Underwood’s grandchildren and great grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
