Emma R. Flores passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 17, 2014 surrounded by her loved ones at Citizens Hospital in Victoria, Texas. Born to Antonio Rodriguez and Hermenia Rangel Rodriguez on September 13, 1929 in Ben Bolt, Texas she was one of seven children; Manuela Cruz (deceased), Lupe Rodriguez (deceased), Horacio Rodriguez (deceased), Lily Mae Alvarado (Mesa, AZ), Petra Villegas (Globe, AZ), Antonio Rodriguez (deceased) and Maria Joslin (deceased).
Emma attended Delmar College and worked as a nurse for several years. In 1952 she married Federico “Fred” P. Flores, after he hitchhiked 600 miles from Camp Pendleton, California. Together the couple raised their four children; Hilda Hernandez (Victoria, TX), Federico Flores, Jr. (deceased), Tina Flores De Leon (Lafayette, LA) and Richard Flores (Victoria, TX).
In the mid 60’s the couple moved from Alice, Texas in support of her husband Fred’s career in the oil & gas industry. The family settled in the Victoria neighborhood, Yucca Heights. It was there that Emma, along with Father Don of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, developed the Community Action Program that served area youth by providing a place to participate in extra curricular activities.
In 1979 the couple started their first family business, Victoria Lease Company. As co-owner, Emma handled the administrative aspects of the company, while supporting her husband’s efforts in the field. This successful arrangement led to the couple opening Victoria Welding & Lease Services, Florco, SureFlo Oil & Gas and Freddy’s Well Service. Emma retired from Freddy’s Well Service in 2006 after 35 years of service to the oil & gas industry.
Many will remember Emma for her classy sense of style or sharp business sense. Her loved ones however will always remember her for unbridled honesty and undying love for Fred.
