Anton James Matula, 82 of Victoria passed away on August 21, 2018. He was born January 25, 1936 in Victoria to Martin and Mary Stockbauer Matula. Anton served his country in the U.S. Navy which included 38 months aboard the USS John W. Thomason serving in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and various other places in the Far East.
Mr. Matula graduated from the University of Texas with an electrical engineering degree and was employed by Gulf Oil Corporation for twenty years, providing communication services for numerous Gulf Oil locations in the U.S. and overseas.
Mr. Anton is survived by his sister, Linda Kucera of Victoria, brothers, Julius (Margie) Matula of Victoria, Melvin (Shirley) Matula of Virginia; numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Matula was preceded in death by his brother-in- law, Herman Kucera.
Visitation will begin at 1 PM on Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Inez with a rosary to be recited at 1:30 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2 PM with Rev. Barnabas Kyeah will officiate. Graveside services with be in Shillerville Cemetery with full military honors under the auspices of the Victoria Veterans Council.
Pallbearers will be Vince Kriefels, Alan Matula, David Matula, Neil Kucera, Cindy Conway, Casey Kucera, Tracey Kriefels and Kate Harper. Honorary pallbearers will be all his great nieces and nephews.
Mr. Matula was very active in the Wood Hi Community serving as President of Friends of William Wood for several years, he was instrumental in the re-opening of William Wood Elementary School. In order to continue this effort, Mr. Matula requested memorials in his name to Friends of William Wood Community or St. Joseph Catholic Church.
