Trevor (Degs) Dudley DeCasseres went home to his Lord on Easter Sunday March 31, 2024. It seems most fitting that he “rose” to heaven on Resurrection Sunday. It comforts us to know that he is now free from the pains, frustrations and losses of the aging process and is able to live again with the joy and exuberance we fondly remember. And we know that he is enjoying his reunion with his Joy who had gone before him to her heavenly home just 10 months ago.
Trevor was born in 1926 in Kingston, Jamaica the youngest of five children. As a youth he excelled in many sports and all things social. He married his one true love, Joy, in 1952 and enjoyed the life they shared in Jamaica. From ocean trips, to mountain hikes, tennis games and parties galore, dancing and gardening, croquet and writing, youth work and church work – always bringing vibrancy and laughter. In 1969 Trevor, Joy and daughter Anna, left Jamaica to emigrate to Canada. This was hard for him but he felt it was the best thing to give his family a better and safer life.
In Canada Trevor did a variety of things including purchasing and running a gourmet cheese store in downtown Victoria. He also worked in many areas of sales but really found his niche in pastoral and preaching ministry. He studied for and received a certificate in Lay Ministry from Regent College and used that training and his gifts of speaking, compassion and wisdom to preach and work at Emmanuel Baptist, The Mustard Seed Street Church, Western Community Baptist Church, North Pender Baptist Church and many other guest preaching stints over the years. He had a heart for the value of small groups and helped establish many such groups often leading them in his unique and captivating way.
Trevor was passionate and loyal. He loved his family and was committed to praying for each member daily. He cared about the people he encountered on life’s journey often inviting them over for a meal and certainly for prayer. He faithfully kept in touch with the many friends he made all over the world. He loved God and wanted more than anything for others to know the love of God that passes understanding. He was disciplined in his daily devotionals and in prayer.
Trevor was a lot of fun. His laughter brightened up a room and he was the life of any party.
He was a welcome and valued member at church, Lawn Bowling Club, Toastmasters, Marriage Watchers and many other groups in which he participated, often taking a leadership role.
Trevor lived his 97 years to the full. He was not perfect but he was perfectly ours. He was a most decent man, wholly authentic and caring. He loved life and a good discussion. He loved his coffee strong and sweet and his meals spicy.
His surviving daughter, Anna, son in law, Francis, grandkids and great grandkids will miss him greatly but are thankful for the many years of gleaning from his wisdom, laughing, playing and praying with him.
We love you Dad, Trevor, TrevMan, Degs, Uncle, Poppa. We will meet you again and have ice cream together. Rest in peace dear man.
