Mom was born 29 October 1941 in the town of Forfar, Scotland. After the war, she traveled with her parents and siblings to Canada on the RMS Aquitania Ocean liner. They landed in Halifax and boarded a train bound for Edmonton, AB. The family lived briefly there before moving onto Dawson Creek, BC and finally landing in the suburbs of Victoria, BC.
Mom’s gypsy soul allowed her to live in many places – Brentwood Bay, Edmonton, Mt Currie, Prince George, Fort St John, Dawson Creek, Castlegar, Armstrong, Anaheim Lake, Spirit River, Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge & Saanichton – making friends along the way.She brought into this world three children: Alan (Joanne), Bonnie, & Shannon (Clark) but they didn’t quite make the cut once her grandchildren arrived: Colton (Kristen), Chloe (Mike) and Cooper. In a sad turn of events, she never got the joy in holding her first great-grandchild, Lucas but she was so proud to have been given the gift of being a GREAT-Grandma.
Sheila had settled down with Chuck in 1983 and added 2 stepsons to the mix – Brent (Daelyn & Morgan) and Byron (Wanda – Brayden & Bryce). They moved around trying their hand at different businesses. Mom had her restaurant; Sheila’s Soup & Sandwich in Vernon and it was there she blossomed. Mom’s love language was acts of service, so she was really in her element during this time. In 2004 Mom lost Chuck suddenly and within months was dealing with cancer. She was a tough egg to crack and even though cancer gave her a good run for her money she came through on the other side, but her health was never the same. In 2011 Mom retired to Vancouver Island. She lived a quiet life, coming up North a few times to visit family & friends but mostly just enjoying the ocean and being closer to her brother and where she grew up. About a year & half ago dementia started presenting in her life and she slowly started disappearing into herself. Mom passed away peacefully April 17 on her own terms. She’s now without pain or confusion and for that we are truly grateful.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, George & Betty Ross, Sister, Carolyn Ross and husband, Chuck McMillan. Left behind with many great memories are her children, grandchildren, great grandson & many extended family & friends.
As per Mom’s wishes there will be no funeral service.
Donations can be made to an animal shelter in your area or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
