Born to Rex and Hilda Publicover in Prince Rupert, Rex grew up in Vancouver, and at the age of 14, he started as a steward in the summers on Union Steamships sailing the west coast. It was at the Squamish ferry terminal that he met a talented pianist passenger named Marion McIntyre in 1948, who became his wife in 1950. After the arrival of sons Terry and Rick, Rex became a steel fabricator so he could be closer to his family in Burnaby. He later upgraded his education to become a structural steel estimator. Rex and Marion were avid scuba-divers and fishers, and the family enjoyed the bounty of the sea. They also camped and travelled with the family all over BC, along with regular forays into the USA. In 1989, they retired to a waterfront home on Saturna Island which Rex designed (complete with passive solar heating) and spent several months each winter exploring sunspots in the USA. Rex and Marion moved to Victoria in 2003, and continued travelling into their late 80’s. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in December 2020, and a video of their lives together, which was created for that occasion, is at Vimeo.com/495134545.
Special thanks to Dr. R. Dale Nicoll and the staff at Broadmead Lodge for providing exceptional care to Rex in his last two years of life.
Predeceased by his sister Mary, and son Terry, and survived by his wife Marion, son Rick, grand-children Ray and Terri, greatgrandchildren Charlie and Aven, and niece Linda, nephews Gary and Mark, and families.
Rex did not want a service and wished to have his ashes scattered at
sea.
In lieu of flowers, a tree planted in his memory, or donations in his name to
Broadmead Care Foundation, would be welcomed
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.firstmemorialsaanich.com for the Publicover family.
