May 1926 – October 10, 2016
We are heartbroken that a beautiful soul left us on Thanksgiving Day, October 10, 2016. Pearl was a thoughtful, kind and gentle woman who was loved by all who knew her. Her sense of humor defined her along with the courage she showed through the past several years of declining health. She always had a smile, a friendly word and was known for counting her blessings – especially her family of whom she was so proud.
She was born in Vancouver in May 1926 to Scottish and Norwegian immigrants David MacKay and Anna Christina Nelson. Her early years were spent in Vancouver and Gibsons Landing with her brothers Norman and Tracy, her sister, Lou and her cousin and best friend, Margaret McPherson. It was in Gibsons where she met and married Frederick O’Neill Feeney and together they started our tight knit family.
She was predeceased by her husband Fred of 34 years in 1979 and she lost her much loved son-in-law David Latham in June of this year. Pearl is survived by her loving daughters, Penny Latham, Patti Hunter (Terry) and Shannon Feeney (Jim Murray); grandchildren, Sharonlee Latham (Ravey), James Latham (Heather) Erynn Hunter (Jade), Kevin Hunter (Kris) and Kristopher Feeney; great grandchildren Reilly Hunter and Connor and Emma Latham.
Pearl was also predeceased by her 2nd husband Ray Nelson (2012) and is survived by his children who she loved and considered her own; Greg Nelson (Jennifer), Ian Nelson (Tony); grandchildren, Peter (Kat), Heather, Colleen, Pam and Patrick and great granddaughters Maia and Zoe.
Pearl cherished her extended family and longtime friends of whom there are many. She loved travelling, playing cards, knitting, quilting and reading. She contributed numerous hours to volunteer organizations and blankets to police forces around Victoria for victims of car accidents. Pearl was dedicated to and unconditionally loved her family and she let us know it every single day. She was our mother, G’Moms, GiGi and our best friend. She will be missed beyond words.
Special thanks to Dr. Woodburn who cared for her for many years, Dr. Fiona Manning and to Sandra Kyle and staff at Berwick House, her home for the past 6 years.
Memorial service to held at 10:00 am, October 22, 2016 at the First Memorial, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Lung Association or KidSport Victoria would be appreciated
