3 February 1923 – 4 October 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Nettie Wood from what was most certainly a broken heart.
Predeceased by only six months by her loving husband of 72 years, Leslie (Les), these last few months without him were heartbreaking.
Nettie is survived by her son Ritchie (Jo), daughters Terilyn (Diana) and Cheryl (Rod) and grandchildren Michael (Nina), Andrew and Cydney (Conor), Sage and Ella,
Born on the 3rd of February 1923 in Macrorie Saskatchewan, Nettie loved to talk about her large Ukrainian family and growing up in Saskatoon with her parents Dmytro and Elena Lozowy, brother Bill, and sisters Julia, Mary, Lena and Annie. She would often recall how proud her father was of “his girls”.
Nettie attended Scott's Business School in Saskatoon while working part-time as what was once known, as a soda jerk. Her first professional job was bookkeeping at Robin Hood Mills. At just 18 years of age, she hopped on a train to Ottawa where she worked as a secretary for the RCMP, before returning to Saskatoon to work for the Dean of Household Science at the University of Saskatchewan. It was here that she met the love of her life. She married then Sub Lieutenant Les Wood in 1950, using rations to buy her wedding dress.
Nettie and Les moved to Halifax in 1952 where their first child Terilyn, was born, while Les was serving with the Naval Peacekeepers in Korea. As a typical Naval family, they
moved again, this time to Victoria where Ritchie and Cheryl were born.
Nettie was the ultimate social butterfly. She joined the Women's Committee of the Victoria Art Gallery in 1964, where she volunteered across numerous areas such as membership, house tours, fashion shows and every fancy dress ball the Gallery hosted. She received a certificate of recognition for her volunteering services from the Lt. Governor on her retirement. Mom and dad continued their very busy social lives as proud members of the Camosun Gyro Club.
Nettie’s other great loves were fashion, music, art, sewing, knitting and modelling (even while 8 months pregnant). At 99, she still loved to crochet and play the piano once a week for her neighbours at the Victorian. She played a mean boogie!
She swore her children were her greatest passion, but for those who knew her well - knew she got her greatest thrill in life from shopping. Her favourite four-letter word was SALE! So, in that vein Mom, we promise to find a gigantic sale, buy something nice, and hope that heaven is having a huge yard sale just for you! “Les! Stop the car!”
