Matt was born to and raised by Patty and John Di Castri in Victoria, British Columbia along with his siblings Dennis, Adrian, Julian, Simon, and Stephanie.
Matt described discovering colour at the age of five; a discovery that led to a lifetime of experimenting with techniques, mediums, forms, styles, and subjects. He studied for one year at Victoria College of Art but in his own words, “didn’t really like people telling [him] what to do”. He continued his art unencumbered by formal instruction and traveled to Calgary, Alberta where he became part of a vibrant community of artists, filmmakers, and musicians. Eventually, Matt made his way back to the West Coast where he co-founded “Accent Screen Printing” with his dear friend Richard Browning.
Never one for attention, excess, or material things, Matt was happiest creating, swimming, reading, and pondering in his small cabin in the woods. To be around him was to feel the same peace one does when out in nature but in an unassuming, smiley human vessel. The ultimate altruist, Matt quietly and consistently showed up for anyone in need of his support. He made you feel important no matter your age by leaning in, listening intently, and asking perceptive questions about your stories, experiences, and perspectives. “Groovy” he would often respond as if everything we ever did was, in fact, the grooviest thing he had ever heard.
Matt is predeceased by Patty, John, and Adrian and lives on in the most cherished memories of Dennis, Julian, Simon, Stephanie, their spouses, his nieces, nephews, and friends.
We are collectively better for knowing and loving Matthew Di Castri.
