Laura was born in North Vancouver on December 16, 1986, the first child of Richard and Mary Hawes (née Mary Bolin.) Laura's younger brother Andrew was born February 17, 1990. The family relocated to Victoria in the early 1990's and Laura grew up in Oak Bay on Monterey Avenue.
Laura studied anthropology at the University of Calgary, and obtained a Juris Doctor degree from the University of British Columbia faculty of Law. She was called to the bar of British Columbia in 2013. Laura met her future husband, Steve Rennick, in Vancouver in 2013. The two were married on September 5, 2015, at Van Dusen Botanical Gardens. Laura practiced child protection law, first with Somers and Company in New Westminster, and later with the Ministry of Attorney General with the Province of British Columbia.
Laura and Steve relocated to Victoria in 2017 along with their dog Harry. Laura and Steve welcomed their baby boy, Frankie, on November 10, 2022.
Laura loved spending time with her family and friends, particularly riding her horse Fitz. Laura was a very competitive adult amateur equestrian rider, and regularly participated in hunter/jumper horse shows in Victoria and at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley. Laura also loved to travel, and has been to nearly every corner of the world, including Australia, Greenland, Thailand, Central and South America, and Scandinavia.
