Our Mom was born on May 23, 1923 on a farm near Winnipeg, Manitoba. The youngest of 10 children, she grew up in a close and loving family. Her father passed away when she was three years old and from that time, her mother raised her and her siblings on her own. Although her childhood years occurred during the Great Depression, and money was always scarce for her family, there was no shortage of love and support among her siblings. For Mom, family was everything.
She met her future husband, Bob during World War II, while he was home on leave and they were married in 1947, after his discharge from the Navy. During their married lives, they lived in Emerson, Manitoba; Winnipeg; London, England; Nelson, BC; Richmond, BC and finally Victoria, BC.
Martha was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Bob and by all of her siblings. She is survived by her son Richard (Kathryn), and her daughter, Janice, as well as Grandaughters Erin (Chris), Jessica (Kevin) and four great-grandchildren. While we are all saddened by her passing, we are thankful for the long and fulfilling life that Mom had, for the family that she loved, for the care that she gave us all and for the example she set of a life well-lived. We are relieved that she is now at peace.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for September and the specifics will be announced at a later date.
