I’m very thankful to have had such a wonderful mother-in-law as Margaret.  She was always very kind and thoughtful and made me feel warmly welcomed in the family.  I see her intelligence and lighthearted nature every day in my beautiful wife Sarah and in my amazing brother-in-law Max.  We miss you Margaret, and you will always have a special place in our hearts.

One of the things I shall always remember is Margaret and Bert’s generosity. I first met them at their home at Pim Head in Sooke. It was truly a magical west coast place, set amongst  the trees on the oceans edge with an amazing shell beach. 

As they showed me around it was clear they loved it there and had very many happy memories. While showing me their studio I had mentioned my daughters were starting to take art classes in school. 

As I was leaving they gave me a glass piece for my girls and Margaret told me to encourage their artistic sides. The girls loved it. My younger daughter still does water colours which appear as gifts at my families  birthdays and holidays.  

I shall always remember Margaret's sense of humour and how smart and interesting she was. She really loved her family and spoke fondly of her grandchildren and Bert.

I was very sorry to hear about your mother. The loss of a parent is one of life’s most challenging events. I am glad that Bert has your support in this time.

Sad to hear of your loss. Margaret was a sweet, smart women.  She had a good sense of humour. 

Loved having her over for dinner, she always commented on what a great meal it was, boosting my my confidence.  And she shared my love of chocolate! 

Her scrabble skills were killer! And she was a great artist and art enthusiast. 

She will be missed.

Margaret was very dear to me. We met in 1995 when she came to work with me at what was then the Superannuation Commission. Such a great experience that we went on to collaborate several times more! She was a mentor to me—a wise and deeply compassionate advisor. Her counsel was always from the heart, and informed by her extraordinary smarts. And she was pragmatic, too—no point worrying about the myriad things that might happen, as only one of them will, and probably not the one I most feared. 

But it was Margaret’s friendship I cherished most—her warmth, her generosity, her honesty and her love. She was one of those (few) people who make everyone around them feel better about themselves. Margaret gave me confidence and, often, strength. She believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself. 

With Bert, Margaret was loving, steadfast and caring. She loved Max and Sarah deeply, telling me more than once that if she’d known what a joy her children would continue to bring to her life, she’d have had more! And she adored her grandchildren. For years we got together every 6 months for “our usual”—lunch at Baan Thai on Blanshard. First on the “menu” was always the latest photos and feats of the fantastic four. I remember Margaret’s mother with fondness, too, and was somewhat in awe of the relationship they shared. All of us who have been touched by Margaret have been immensely blessed. 

And let’s not forget “Mrs. Daffodil’s” artistry—in a variety of media and in the garden. I have many lovely memories of sharing those interests, too—though I couldn’t come close to her knowledge or expertise in either. (Which reminds me that I need to divide my evergreen irises’ rhizomes—or are they bulbs? Margaret would have known.)

I will miss Margaret, very much. 

To her family, I send my deepest condolences. May you find peace in the legacy of this extraordinary woman.

Margaret enjoyed her family.  As Owen’s dad, I was at Margaret’s and Bert’s home, for the wedding of Sarah and Owen, also an Easter egg hunt for her grandkids, and a Thanksgiving dinner at Owen’s and Sarah’s home with Margaret and Bert.  Margaret played music with Sarah and Amy for many years.
