He is predeceased by brother Dennis, and survived by his brother Spencer Davies and family, his dear wife of 66 years Margaret Davies, his children Brad (Nancy), Wendy (Brian), Chris (Cathy), Lynn, and Joy (D’Arcy), and grandchildren Jill, Bek, Mark (Haley), Taleah (Aaron), Savannah, Lydia and Emylia. Lloyd was born in Victoria, BC and his early years were spent in Fairfield. He attended Sir James Douglas School and then Victoria High School where he worked on the school newspaper creating cartoons for the amusement of his classmates. He took a business course at Victoria College (before it became reincorporated as University of Victoria).
Lloyd worked for the family business, Spencers Stores, starting at age 14 sweeping floors and stocking shelves. He and his brother Spencer continued to grow the business over the next 40 plus years with locations on Douglas Street and Government Street, until closing the doors for the last time in March of 1986. Lloyd always enjoyed being on the water, and is a long time member of the Victoria Yacht Club beginning as a Junior Member in 1943. Dad was hooked on fishing, never giving up on the chance of catching ‘the big one’ (no matter how small the boat). He spent many hours trolling the water off Cattle Point and picnicking with the family on Discovery Island. He also spent many hours fishing with his best buddy Don Elder and then they would watch Wall Street News together. It was always a great day when the fishing was good and the market was up.
Lloyd and Margaret raised their growing family in a little house on Allenby Street, then in a larger house on Henderson Road when Allenby was full to bursting. The next house was on Cadboro Bay Road, across from the Uplands Golf Course. As the nest gradually emptied, Dad filled his passion for travelling. Lloyd and Margaret saw all parts of the world, and he especially enjoyed any country with a warm climate. It was during a trip to Europe where Lloyd was enthralled by the geraniums growing in window boxes in Switzerland. Upon returning home, he became an enthusiastic cultivator of geraniums, giving many of his cherished babies to family and friends.
In 1990, Lloyd and Margaret moved to a house on Cadboro Bay beach, loving referred to as “The Beach House”. Life at The Beach House was far from quiet as there was a constant flow of visitors and the grandchildren played for many hours on the beach. Even the ducks in the pond at Mystic Springs discovered that Dad was a light touch and would follow him to the garage where he kept the bird seed.
Unfortunately Margaret was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2008, and went into care in 2015. The property was sold in 2018 and the Beach House was barged to its new life in Coombs (oh the stories those walls could tell). Dad moved to Parkwood Place so he could be close to Margaret in Parkwood Court, just across the street. With a sweet tooth to match his heart, he would enjoy tea and goodies with his friends at Parkwood Place, then cross Shelbourne to have a second helping of tea time with Margaret at Parkwood Court. When his legs were no longer up for the journey, he sent flowers to Margaret every Thursday. When Dad’s health declined this May, he moved to Parkwood Court. His last days were spent with the comfort of his loving wife and family around him. We are deeply grateful to all the wonderful people at Parkwood Place and Parkwood Court who have been like family to us these past few years.
