Linda Susan Siegal, 83, of Fairfield Road, died at home on Friday, December 15, 2023. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, the only daughter of Max Siegel and Gloria (Botvin) Siegel Blackman. She is survived by her many friends and caregivers who became family to her.
Linda grew up in Providence and received her B.A. in Education, her Teachers’ Certification from Boston State College and M. Ed. In Counselling from Tufts University.
Linda moved to Toronto in 1975, becoming a Canadian citizen in 1981. She worked as a teacher and guidance counsellor in Canada, the U.S. and in Iran for a time. She also had a private counselling practice in Victoria.
Linda was an early member of the Raging Grannies and her social activism was a hallmark of her personality and life activity. She supported KAIROS Victoria, a faith based activist non-profit organization.
Linda had a broad interest and curiosity for everything, including politics, religion, travel, culture, food, fashion and the arts. She was an active member of the local storytellers guild and performed to acclaim in a local performance of “The Vagina Monologues” and later relished being part of an improv comedy group. Linda was a long-standing board member of Theatre Inconnu. She loved to meet and interact with people from all places and walks of life. Linda lived for extended periods in Iran and Cuba and travelled to many other countries. She was a citizen of the world.
Linda was a youthful, energetic and often feisty presence and communicated with candor and empathy for others. She was “adopted” as an esteemed elder by a group of young people living in a communal household nearby.
We are grateful to all her caregivers, including Just Like Family and VIHA, plus her Nurse Practitioner and Hospice Nurses who helped her pass peacefully at home surrounded by beloved friends and caregivers.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice in Linda’s honour.
