Joy Bailie

Joy Nan Bailie was born on October 31, 1936, in Vancouver, and passed away peacefully on October 4, 2022, at Beacon Hill Villa in Victoria. Joy was predeceased by her loving husband Don Dublin in 2013, and is survived by her daughter Rena Miciek.

Passionate about playing her piano and her teaching profession, Joy was gifted in imaginatively leading children, becoming known as Dr. Joyful for her role in taking children to sing in Santa Claus Land at the Arctic Circle. During her 60 years in Victoria, she was instrumentally involved in many art and community functions.

An avid traveler, Joy followed her many dreams, After so many active years, she and Don spent peaceful and happy times at their home on Langford Lake, relaxing and visiting with family and friends.

Joy has left us with many loving memories, some shared by her sister Barbara Clark.

ODE TO MY SISTER JOY

The little town of Hope, B.C.

Holds wonderful memories of my sister and me.

The eldest of seven, our Dear Mother would tell,

Minding the babies was a task you did well.

At a very young age you could wash iron and cook,

But your favourite pastime was reading a book.

Musical memories are the strongest for me,

In the cold little church, many nights we would be.

I’d sit and listen while you played songs of old.

Then home we’d walk, hand and hand in the cold.

“Stand up straight and think warm, dear”, you’d say with love.

Let’s try to count the stars above.

As a teenager you longed to spread your wings,

Your mind was given to far greater things.

Education and music have been your heartbeat,

You have passed on the gift to each child you did meet.

With costumes and stories and trunks full of puppets,

Dr. Joyful has mesmerized thousands of poppets.

Joy will be sadly missed and remembered with love at a private family gathering.
